Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Tech Captures Lykowski Title with 4-0 Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech volleyball team capped an undefeated 4-0 finish at the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament this weekend with a Saturday morning win over Indiana University Kokomo, 25-23, 26-24, 26-24 and an afternoon sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph 25-3, 25-10, 25-9.

In the morning session, Cassie Sarabia and Jazmin Alexander led the Warriors with 12 and 11 kills, respectively with Paige Doellman rounding out the attack game with 10 of her own. Taylor Kelso provided a game-high 22 digs, while Karli Jones dished out 23 assists to lead all players.

After the Cougars jumped out to a small lead to start the match, Tech was able to even the playing field and create the back and forth battle between the two squads before taking the 24-21 lead and eventually the 25-23 decision. Set two quickly turned into a duplicate fight for the lead, similar in the opening set, as both the Warriors and their opponents sat tied at 24-24. Gabby Staggs's three consecutive kills and an error from IU Kokomo gave the Orange and Black a 2-0 lead heading into game three. Both teams took turns compiling runs to generate their own advantages through much of set three before again being locked at 24-24. A set of Tech kills granted the Warriors the 26-24 decision and 3-0 sweep.

In game two, Staggs lead Tech with a game-high 11 kills, while Autumn Stokes lead all players with 22 assists. Kelso rounded out the top performers of the match with 14 digs of her own.

The Warriors jumped out early in the first set, finding themselves up 16-2 with a steadily growing lead and strong play to hold their opponents to just three points in the set. By early in set two, the Crimson Wave made a push to remain close to the Orange and Black, but a six-point run late would be a dagger for Calumet, as the Warriors came out on top 25-10. In the final set, Tech was able to again hold Calumet to single digit points in the set, as multiple offensive runs would grant the Warriors the third set advantage and the match victory.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Indiana Tech's 4-0 finish crowned them the 2016 tournament champions with Kelso receiving MVP honors and Staggs earning a place on the All-Tournament Team.

Tech (20-8, 6-4 WHAC) will remain at home as they host Michigan-Dearborn at the Schaefer Center on Wednesday, October 19. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and links to live video and stats will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
