WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team concluded its opening weekend of play by shutting out Miami-Hamilton, 5-0, and 6-0, respectively, on Sunday afternoon at Grand Park.
One day after the offense scored 44 runs over 14 innings of work, it was the pitchers turn to shine on an overcast day in the heart of Indiana.
James McReynolds threw six innings of two-hit baseball in game one, striking out eight batters and now allowing a runner to advance past first base.
Josh Wiesman picked up the save with three innings of one-hit ball as he struck out four batters.
The Warriors got all the offense they needed in the second inning as they took advantage of a hit batsman, passed ball and a Harriers error to score twice. They added in three more insurance runs in the fourth. A single from
Peyton Newsom started things off and after a hit batsman and a walk,
Robert Nagel found himself up with the bases loaded and nobody out. He would fly out to center but earned a sacrifice as Newsom was able to score on the play.
Kyle Mead then followed with a single to plate two Tech runs.
Game two saw just as much stellar pitching and timely hitting from the Orange and Black.
Johnny Crawford got the win after pitching 4.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out eight.
Tech would give Crawford all the cushion he needed in the bottom of the first as
Brian Hakes singled in Mead and
Tighe Koehring drove in
Charlie Sipe on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Warriors would tack on a run in each of the next two innings to extend their advantage to 4-0 before Hakes doubled in two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-0.
Cody Kellar would wiggle his way out of a bases loaded jam in the top half of the fifth to preserve the shutout as he combined with
Brian Gremaux to allow just one hit over the next three innings as the Warriors finished the weekend undefeated.
Tech (4-0) returns to action next week as they head to Union College for a pair of games against Union and Cincinnati-Clermont. First pitch is schedule for 2 p.m. from Barbourville, Kentucky. (UPDATE): Tech will now travel to Georgetown College of a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Robert N. Wilson Field.
