Tech Can’t Handle Golden Eagles in WHAC Semifinals Loss

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 15th-ranked and third-seeded Indiana Tech Warriors fell to eighth-ranked and second-seeded Cornerstone, 90-65, on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament.
 
Tanner Watkins led Tech with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor and grabbed three rebounds. Miles Robinson scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Tyrece Edwards chipped in nine points and four rebounds. Dominique Walls, Milos Milidragovic, Lavonte Davis and Scott Schwieterman combined for 26 rebounds, with Walls leading the way with eight and Davis and Schwieterman adding six points each.
 
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game, but the Warriors would respond with seven straight points, including five from Watkins, to tie the game at the 16:17 mark.
 
A 12-2 response from the defending national champions would put them ahead 19-9 with 11:31 to go in the first half. Cornerstone would continue to increase its lead over the Orange and Black in the first half as they would into halftime up 49-25.
 
Coach John Peckinpaugh's team would open the second half on an 11-6 run to cut the deficit to 18 with 16:51 to go in the game, but the Golden Eagles would answer with a 14-7 spurt to push the lead back up to 25.
 
The Warriors were unable to get within 25 the rest of the game as the hosts would go up by as many as 33 points to knock the Orange and Black out of the WHAC Tournament.
 
Tech (23-9) will have to wait until the NAIA Division 2 Men's Basketball Selection Show on March 2 to see if they will get an at-large bid to the National Tournament. The show begins at 7 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on the NAIA Network, powered by Stretch Internet.
