Warriors Split First Day of NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Indiana Tech softball team split their first day of games at the NTC Spring Games at Legends Way Ballfield on Monday, falling to Bemidji State, 12-8, before defeating Texas Wesleyan, 2-1 in the nightcap.

The first game saw 13 errors combined between the two teams while the Beavers pounded out 14 hits against Alli Watson and Jamie Kilps. Tori Simper led the way offensively for the Warriors going 2-4 with two RBI's while leadoff hitter Caitlyn Walker has also two hits and a stolen base. Jenevie Rivas went 1-3 with a double and a walk.

The Beavers took advantage of an error in the fifth inning and used four hits to push across six runs and increase their lead to 11-2. The Orange and Black would come back with three runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Hannah Foltz and Amber Frye, while Simper plated Foltz to cut the deficit to 11-5.

Three BSU errors in the bottom of the seventh kept Tech alive as they scored three more times to put the pressure on the Beavers, but they were unable to complete the comeback, falling 12-8.

Cassandra Mendoza would play the hero in the second game of the day against Texas Wesleyan, driving in two runs and going 2-4 to lead the Warriors. Mendoza reached on a fielder's choice in the fourth as Kilps scored to make 2-2 and then singled to drive in Selena Schulteis in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

Kilps, who went five innings in relief to pick up the win, allowed only two hits over the final three innings to shut down the Beavers and preserve the victory. Schulteis finished the game 3-3 with an RBI as well.

Tech (6-8) returns to action on Tuesday with another pair of games, taking on Missouri Baptist at 3 p.m. before facing off with crosstown rival Saint Francis at 7 p.m.
