FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team kicked off Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic-Conference (WHAC) play on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern Ohio at Warrior Stadium, winning 19-6 in game one before walking off with a 9-8 victory in 11 innings in the night cap.
With each game going over the three hour and 15 minute mark, the offense was on display in the Warriors home opener as both sides combined for 25 runs and 28 hits in the first game with six Tech players recording an RBI.
Brian Hakes went 3-4 with a triple and four RBI's.
Peyton Newsom and
Charlie Sipe each collected three RBI's with the former getting two hits and the latter getting a double while going 4-5.
Connor McLaughlin picked up the win in relief, going 3.1 innings with three strike outs.
Hakes would single in Sipe and
Kyle Mead in the first before tripling in Mead again two innings later before Newsom would double in Hakes two batters later to make it a 4-0 game.
After Tech scored three more runs in the fourth, the Racers would come storming back with eight runs in the sixth to take the lead. The Warriors would respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead and take the first game 16-9.
Game two, originally scheduled to go seven innings, turned out to be an instant classic with 17 more runs being scored and 23 hits being tallied. Sipe would drive in four more runs with a double and a grand slam while Newsome added three RBI's including the game-tying and game-winning runs on a walk-off double in the 11
th.
Tech held a 7-4 lead going into the sixth inning, but UNOH would score three times to knot it up before getting the go-ahead run in the top of the 11
th when Carlos Barerga, Jr. smashed a double down the right field line to go up 8-7.
Newsome though, would insure the Warriors started off their home slate with a sweep as he ripped one into the left field gap to score
Robert Nagel and Sipe and give Tech a 2-0 mark in conference play.
