FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team concluded its weekend set against Marygrove in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Stadium with a doubleheader sweep, winning 3-1, and 9-4, respectively, to complete the series sweep.
Charlie Sipe picked up four RBI's, a double and a walk on the day while stealing five bases as the Warriors swiped 11 on the day.
Kyle Mead went 4-8 with three RBI's, three runs and two steals and
Brian Hakes was 4-6 with two walks, a double and five RBI's.
Keith Tatum and
Tighe Koehring both doubled while
Peyton Newsom and
Glen McClain drove in two runs.
Jason Sterrett went six strong innings in game one, allowing one run on hits six hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters while
Connor McLaughlin finished the remaining three innings to pick up the save. Josh Weiseman earned the win in game two after coming on in relief in the third, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out seven.
Saturday's games played to a different script to the twinbill sweep on Friday, as the Warrior offense took a while to get warmed up against the Mustangs pitching. Newsome drove in Mead with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before Robert Nagle scored on a wild pitch one inning later to give Tech a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs would cut the deficit to one in the fifth after an error and a pair of singles, but Sipe would double home Mead in the eighth to get McLaughlin enough breathing room to close out game three of the series.
Tech's offense looked like it would get back on track in game two as they pushed across three runs thanks to four hits and a Marygrove error, but Daniel Bailey was able to get an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to limit the damage.
The visitors would chase starter
Brian Gremaux in the third with three hits, but Wiesman would come in and promptly pick off Dallas Chicone to end the inning. McClain would get the hosts the lead back in the bottom of the inning with a single to score Nagel. The Mustangs would rally back with a run in the fourth to tie it at four, but the Orange and Black would score twice in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead for good.
Tech (21-3, 6-0 WHAC) takes a quick break from conference action on Tuesday when they make the short trip to Huntington to take on the Foresters for a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Forest Glen Park.
