Warriors Stifled by Golden Eagles in Doubleheader Sweep

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23 Indiana Tech baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak snapped by Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Cornerstone on Friday afternoon at DeWitt Field as the Golden Eagles swept the doubleheader. Tech fell by a single run in both contests, 5-4, and 2-3.

Kyle Mead drove in three runs in game one and also scored once while Tighe Koehring went 2-4 with an RBI. Mark Carpenter was 2-3 with a walk, a double and a triple, and scored three times. Jared Harvey went two innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with a strikeout before handing the ball over to James McReynolds, who threw six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out eight and taking the hard-luck loss.

Cornerstone struck first with a double in the second, but the Warriors would tie it up in the next half inning after an RBI groundout from Mead scored Carpenter. The Golden Eagles would retake the lead in the bottom of the third though after a single and an error on Harvey allowed a run to score.

Mead would drive in his second run of the game in the fifth with a single up the up the middle to plate Carpenter to tie it up at two-all, but the hosts would score three more times in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead heading into the final third of game one.

The Orange and Black would score runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to complete the comeback as they saw their winning streak come to an end in the 5-4 loss.

Johnny Crawford took to the hill in game two, throwing six innings of three-run baseball and allowing just four hits while striking out six. Mead would pick up two more hits and another run while Peyton Newsom and Glen McClain each went 1-3 with an RBI. Keith Tatum doubled in a pinch-hit at-bat in the seventh and Koehring picked up a pair of walks.

The visitors would strike first in the night cap after McClain would single in Koehring in the top of the second, but Cornerstone would put up a three-spot on the board in the third, using three hits and back-to-back sacrifice flies to take a 3-1 lead, which would be enough for starter Ben Sheckler, who went the distance and struck out eight batters while allowing just six hits.

The Warriors would threaten in the top of the sixth with two batters on and two outs, but were only able to push one across as Newsome drove in Mead with a single and Cornerstone was able to hold on to the 3-2 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep in the weather-shortened series with Saturday's games being cancelled due to inclement weather.

Tech (22-5, 6-2 WHAC) takes a break from its road trip on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Lourdes in the Summit City. First pitch is schedule for 3 p.m. from Warrior Stadium and links to live video, audio and stats will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
