GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech baseball team was swept by No. 21 Davenport in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, falling 4-3 and 5-4.
Chase Keathley pitched six innings of three-run baseball, giving up five hits and striking out four in game one.
Keith Tatum went 3-4 with a double while
Charlie Sipe also added a double and a run.
Tech took a 1-0 in the first after an error by the Panthers allowed Sipe to score from second, but Davenport would tie it up in the bottom of the inning with a triple. The two teams would trade runs again in the fourth with the
Robert Nagel scoring on another error from the hosts and the 21
st-ranked team in the nation using a single up the middle to tie it up at two in the bottom of the inning.
Another error from Davenport gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but the Panthers would score a run in the sixth and eighth to take game one.
Branson Dossen,
Mark Carpenter,
Zach Fyfe and Tatum would each record an RBI in game two with Carpenter going 2-2 with a walk and a double.
Peyton Newsom would add a pair of walks, hits and runs.
Josh Wiesman gave two unearned runs in the loss, going 3.2 innings in relief and allowing four hits while striking out three.
The Panthers would take the lead with a home run in the first but the Orange and Black would tie it up it in the second when Fyfe singled up the middle to bring home Newsom before Dossen plated
Tighe Koehring one inning later to take a 2-1 lead.
A two run homer from the hosts would find the Warrior trailing 4-3 after three complete innings but a double from Carpenter and an RBI groundout by Tatum would give the visitors the lead in the top half of the sixth.
Tech looked like it would hold on for the split until the bottom of the seventh when the Panthers took advantage of an error from Fyfe, which would have ended the game, and DU came back in the next at-bat with a two-out single from Matt Priebe to score to tying and winning runs to give the hosts the sweep on the first day of the weekend set.
