SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech softball team picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) wins of the season on Saturday afternoon against Lourdes with a 6-3 victory in game one before pulling out a 3-2 win in 11 innings in game two at Pacesetter Park.
Caitlyn Walter went 3-5 with a triple and two RBI's in game one while
Amber Frye and
Maggie McCrory each picked up an RBI.
Jamie Kilps went 2-3 with a double and a run while also picking up the win after going six innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out three.
Tori Simper would get her first save of the season after escaping a two-on and nobody out jam in the seventh.
Tied at three after six innings, Kilps would double with one out in the seventh to get Tech's offense going. A fielder's choice would allow her to reach third and also allowed McCrory to reach base giving the Warriors runners on the corners with just an out. After a strikeout by
Selena Schulteis, Walter would clear the bases with a triple and also score on the play after an error by the center fielder to give the Orange and Black a 6-3 lead.
Simper would then enter in the bottom of the inning and quickly found herself in trouble after a single and a walk. A failed sacrifice bunt attempt and a good play at shortstop by
Cortney Bingham to get the lead run would quickly give Tech two outs, but a single in the next at-bat would give Lourdes a bases-loaded opportunity and the winning run at the plate. Simper would induce a grounder to Walter at third however to end the threat and give the Warriors their first conference win of the year.
Game two saw the Warriors get 11 hits but leave 11 runners on base before they broke through in the 11
th to complete the sweep.
Alexis Vargo would pick up the win in relief after going 6.1 innings and giving up just three hits to the Gray Wolves. She would also go 2-5 with a double and two RBI's. Kilps and
Hannah Foltz would each pick up two hits apiece with the former getting a double while Frye would triple.
Lourdes would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth but Tech came right back in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI double from Vargo to plate
Alli Watson and Bingham. Pitching ruled the next two and a half innings until the ninth when the Warriors had the bases loaded and one out, but failed to capitalize on their opportunities while the hosts squandered a bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the inning.
A Kilps double in the 11
th would get things going for the visitors. A single from Foltz would get Kilps thrown out at third, but Tech took advantage of two straight errors by the Lourdes third baseman to get another opportunity with the bases loaded and one out. A wild pitch by Brooke Gallaher would give the Orange and Black the winning run as Vargo worked around a one-out walk to complete the sweep.
Tech (13-21, 2-4 WHAC) returns to action on Sunday when they head to Livonia, Michigan for a doubleheader with Madonna. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from University Field and links to live stats will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
