Warriors Stay Undefeated in WHAC Tournament with 9-5 Win over Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The fourth-seeded Indiana Tech baseball defeated fifth-seeded Concordia, 9-5, on Monday evening at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in their second game of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament.

The Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead in the first but the Warriors would come right back with six in the bottom of the inning, capped by a grand slam by Peyton Newsom to retake the lead as they never looked back. Brian Hakes and Tighe Koehring would hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game up at two earlier in the inning.

Junior right-hander Jared Harvey would settle down after giving up a third run in the second and picked up the win after going 7.1 innings, giving up five runs in all, three earned, while striking out five Cardinals. Zach Sailors would pick up his first save of the season after going the final 1.2 innings and giving up just one hit.

Glen McClain would smash a double to center in the fourth to plate Hakes and put the Orange and Black up 7-3. After the Cardinals pushed two across in the eighth to chase Harvey out of the game, Tech would get the runs back in the bottom of the inning as Newsom knocked in his fifth run of the game with a single up the middle to score Hakes while Tatum smashed a double to left center as Charlie Sipe scored the ninth run of the game for the Warriors.

Hakes and Newsom finished the game with three hits each while the former scored three times. Sipe drew a pair of walks and scored twice while McClain had a pair of hits. Hakes and McClain would each swipe one base each.
