GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The fourth-seeded Indiana Tech baseball team defeated third-seeded University of Northwestern Ohio, 3-2, in 10 innings on Monday afternoon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on the campus of Davenport University in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Complex (WHAC) Tournament.
It was the fourth straight extra-innings game between the two schools in their fifth matchup of the season.
Mark Carpenter was the hero for the Warriors as he snapped a 0-3 day with a single through the left side to score
Charlie Sipe from second, who led off the 10
th with a walk and was sacrificed over from
Robert Nagel.
Brian Hakes gave the Orange and Black the lead in the fifth as he singled in
Alex Delk and would come around to score after a double steal attempt lead to a throw into left field as the WHAC First-Team All-Conference selection scored to put Tech up 2-0.
The Racers would cut the deficit to one in the seventh after a home run from Kevin Flores, which chased started
James McReynolds, who took a no-decision after going six innings and allowing one earned run on five hits.
UNOH would tie the game in the ninth with a double down the left field line off
Connor McLaughlin, but Crawford would come in to strike out the next two batters to send the game into extras.
Glen McClain and Hakes would each pick up two hits while McClain also had a double.
Johnny Crawford picked up the win after going 1.2 innings in relief and struck out three while allowing just one hit.
Tech (36-16) will play fifth-seeded Concordia, who defeated Davenport, 5-4, in game two at approximately 7:30 p.m. at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Links to live video, audio and stats will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
