FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team ran its winning streak to seven games on Saturday afternoon as they overcame an early deficit to defeat Concordia, 4-3, in their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opener at Cardinal Stadium.
Concordia's Alex Vrzovski put on a show in the first 31 minutes of the game as he recorded a hat trick to put the Cardinals up 3-0, scoring in the 10
th, 12
th and 31
st minutes, respectively.
"We started the game on the bus and Concordia deservedly snatched their opportunities," head coach
David Bokhart said.
Tech would counter quickly in the second half though as
Brennan Cochran made his season debut following a season-ending injury a year ago as scored his first goal of the season in the 48
th minute to cut the Cardinals lead to two.
Mitch Smith brought the Warriors to within a goal 11 minutes later as he notched his fourth of the season with a penalty kick.
The Orange and Black would tie the game in the 63
rd minute as
Oswaldo Segura Diaz would beat the Cardinals keeper for his second goal of the season and then score the game-winner in the 71
st minute as Tech completed the comeback.
"I can't really give credit to one factor in the comeback other than some good effort in attacking the ball in the box and I guess believing that it was possible. Once you get the first one back, you're lifted. When you get the second and third, you just feel it's your day."
The Warrior defense tightened up in the second half as well, allowing just three shots, and none on goal in the last 45 minutes while the Orange and Black had seven shots on frame in the last period.
Tech (7-0, 1-0 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Brighton, Michigan for a conference matchup with Michigan-Dearborn. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. from the Legacy Center.
