LIMA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team fell to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH), 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) on Wednesday evening at Racer Gymnasium.
With the loss the Warriors will get the number eight seed in the WHAC Tournament, which is scheduled to start Saturday with first round games. Tech will face off with the number five seed, Aquinas, at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
Lima native
Mara Zell led the Warriors with eight kills while
Aubree Eggers and
Courtney Mack notched seven kills each, with Eggers hitting a team-high .400.
Karli Jones dished out a team-best 20 assists and had nine digs along with
Madeline MacDonald.
The first set would see the two teams trade points over the first nine serves before the Racers used a 5-0 run to go ahead 8-5. UNOH would continue to hold the lead through the middle part of the set before another 5-0 run would give the hosts a 20-12 lead over Tech and they would take the first set, 25-14.
The Warriors would battle back in the second, keeping pace with the Racers before an Eggers kill would spark a 4-0 run to put the Orange and Black up 17-12. UNOH would respond quickly though, taking seven of the next nine points to tie the set up at 19-19 and capping the run with a 6-0 run to take a 23-19 advantage. A Racer service error would give Tech the serve back at 23-20, but back-to-back attack errors from the Warriors would give UNOH the next two points to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Orange and Black would come up firing in the third with a 5-1 lead, with Eggers and Zell each recording two kills during the first six points. The Racers responded with a 4-0 run to tie the match, but the Warriors would not allow the hosts to get ahead by more than three points in a set that saw nine ties. A Zell kill would stop a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 17-16, but UNOH would rattle off five straight points to take a commanding 22-16 lead before finishing off the sweep with a 25-18 set win.
Tech (14-20, 5-9 WHAC) will be back in action with the first round of the WHAC Tournament against Aquinas on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
