Strong Second Half Propels Warriors to Dominant Win over UM-Dearborn

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team extended their winning streak to seven games on Tuesday evening as they defeated the University of Michigan-Dearborn, 102-67 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at the Schaefer Center.

Joel Wincowski led the Warriors with a season-high 23 points, going 8-8 from the field and 5-5 from three-point territory while dishing out four assists and collecting a pair of steals. Edmond Early, Jr. added a career-high 17 points off the bench while Dylan Phair netted 16 points. Darren Groves, Scott Schwieterman and Max Huber would also score in double figures, collecting 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Groves corralling 10 rebounds for the first double-double of the season while Huber had six blocks.

Tech would take the lead right off the opening tip as Nic Williams grabbed the ball and converted a layup three seconds into the game, but the Wolverines would go on an 11-3 run over the next three minutes and force head coach Ted Albert to call an early timeout. UM-Dearborn would grow their lead to as many as 10 with 15:05 remaining in the first half, but the Warriors would cut the deficit back to single digits quickly with a three-pointer from Wincowski.

Trailing 21-13 with 11:27 on the clock, the hosts would go on a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 22-21 following an old-fashioned three-point play from Groves. The visitors would not be phased though, rattling off seven consecutive points to go ahead 28-22 with 6:39 until the break. An 8-0 run from Albert's squad would give Tech a 30-28 at the 2:31 mark in the half.

A tied ballgame appeared to be the case heading into the locker room, but Groves would have other plans as the 6-8 forward, running the court like LeBron James, would pull up from just outside the three-point line and nail the shot before the buzzer to give the Warriors a 38-35 lead at the break.

The two sides would come out trading baskets to open the second half of play with the Orange and Black continuing to hold the lead. A quick 10-0 spurt in a 90-second stretch would give the Warriors a 62-49 advantage with 12:01 to play as the Wolverines would call a timeout to try and stop the momentum.

UM-Dearborn would come out of the huddle with a jumper to cut the deficit to 11, but the Warriors would rattle off six straight points to push the lead up to 17. Phair would go on an 11-0 run of his own to grow the Tech lead to 21 and the Warriors would hold the momentum for the rest of the game, leading by as many as 36 points while cracking the 100-point plateau for the first time this season.

Tech (7-0, 3-0 WHAC) starts a four-game road trip on Saturday as they travel to Indiana University Kokomo for 3 p.m. tipoff from Cougar Gymnasium.
