Tech Drops First Game of the Year in 87-68 Setback to Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team suffered its first setback of the season Monday evening as they fell to NCAA Division II opponent Walsh, 87-68, at the Cecchini Center.

Nic Williams led the Warriors with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds while Max Huber added 11 points off the bench. Darren Groves chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds while Edmond Early, Jr. had nine points.

Tech would jump out to a 14-4 lead over the Cavaliers in the first five minutes of the game, using a 9-0 spurt to cap the run with 15:23 on the clock. Walsh would battle back though, cutting the deficit down to a point at 23-22 with 8:10 left in the first half and tied the game up at 26-26 just 46 seconds later.

A 7-0 run from the hosts would give them a 29-16 advantage with 6:52 left in the opening half, but an 8-1 run from the visitors would give the Orange and Black the lead back at 34-31. The two teams would trade baskets over the remaining four minutes of the first half and entered the locker rooms all knotted up at 38.

The Cavaliers would open up the second half on a 6-0 run, but the Warriors would cut the deficit down to one with 15:05 remaining in regulation. Walsh would respond with an 11-4 spurt to grow their advantage up to eight points at 59-51. Tech would answer back with a 7-0 run to make it a one-point game with 10:30 left in the second half, but that would be the closest the Orange and Black would be the rest of the way as Walsh used an 8-0 spurt to kick start a 28-10 run over the final 10 minutes of action while holding Tech scoreless over the 4:15.

Tech (8-1) returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Saturday as they play their third of four straight road games with a visit to No. 1 and reigning national runner-up Cornerstone. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. from Mol Arena.
