Tech Survives Scare from Cougars with Buzzer-Beater from Wincowski

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team kept their perfect record intact on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Indiana University Kokomo, 78-77, in nonconference action at Cougar Gymnasium.

Max Huber scored a team-high 14 points off the bench while grabbing seven rebounds and four assists while Joel Wincowski and Dylan Phair added 13 points apiece. Scott Schwieterman had 12 points and seven rebounds while Nic Williams chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds as well.

With 15 seconds remaining in the game, the Cougars Antoin Clifton would drain a three-pointer to put the hosts up 77-76. Darren Groves would grab the offensive rebound off a miss jumper by Phair who got the ball over to Wincowski who nailed the game-winning shot with just two seconds left in the game to give the Warriors the 78-77 lead. Clifton would get off a desperation shot at the buzzer, but it would be off the mark as Tech improved to 8-0 on the season.

Tech would open up the game on a 10-5 run, only to see the Cougars use a 7-2 spurt to tie the game up at 12 with 13 minutes left in the first half. The Warriors would retake the lead and extend their advantage to as many as 10 points with 5 minutes to go in the half, but the hosts would use a 10-0 run to close out the half as the teams headed into the locker room with the score deadlocked at 35-35.

The second half would be another back-and-forth affair for the first 10 minutes before the visitors would get out to an 11-point lead at 70-59 with 5:56 to go in the game. IU Kokomo would use a 15-2 run over the last four and a half minutes though, to take a one-point lead before Wincowski would break the Cougars hearts with his game-winning shot.

Tech (8-0) returns to action Monday as they travel to Canton, Ohio for a battle with NCAA Division II opponent Walsh University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from the Cecchini Center.
