Strong Third Quarter Propels Warriors to Win over Cougars

KOKOMO, Ind. – The No. 14-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated Indiana University Kokomo, 89-49, on Thursday evening in nonconference action at Cougar Gymnasium.
 
Haley Cook led all scorers with 25 points on 9-10 shooting from the field and went 7-8 from three-point range, tying her program record for the most triples made in a game. DeAnn Kauffman had 17 points while Kendall Knapke added 14 points, four rebound and four assists. Keanna Gary recorder her third double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Cook started off the game with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Warriors the early lead, but the Cougars would answer back with a 12-4 run to take a 12-10 lead at the 4:59 mark in the first. IU Kokomo find themselves leading 16-15 with 3:26 left in the quarter, but a three-pointer from Kauffman and a layup from Bella Lozano-Dobbs would put Tech up 20-16 at the break.
 
The hosts would cut the deficit to 24-23 at the 5:55 mark in the second thanks to a 7-4 run, but a basket from Rachel Bell would spark a 10-0 run for the Warriors as they extend their advantage to 34-23 with just over two minutes left in the half.
 
Coming out of the locker room with a 39-27 lead, the visitors would use a 16-5 spurt to increase their lead to 23 points at 55-32 with six and a half minutes left in the third, with Cook and Gary combining to score all 16 points during the run. Cook would hit five three-pointers in the quarter while going 7-7 from the field as the Warriors scored 35 points in the third to take a 74-41 lead into the fourth.
 
The offensive explosion would continue for Tech in the final quarter with the team using a 10-0 to increase their lead 43 points and would eventually open up a 44-point lead before winning their third game of the year with an 89-44 victory.
 
Tech (3-1) opens up a six-game home stand on Saturday when they host USCAA foe Wright State Lake. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
