GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 11-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) rival Aquinas, 68-63, on Wednesday evening at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center. With the win, sixth-year head coach
Jessie Biggs collected her 100
th career victory, all of them coming with the Warriors.
Biggs becomes just the third coach in program history to hit triple digits in the win column, joining former greats Gary Cobb and Kathleen Hewelt.
Keanna Gary led the Orange and Black with a game-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while
Kendall Knapke had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Haley Cook added 12 points while
DeAnn Kauffman added 10 points off the bench.
Tech would come out and dominate the opening quarter, using a 14-0 to cap the period and take a 23-5 lead into the first quarter break. The Saints would commit five turnovers over the last five minutes of the quarter while missing their last five shots of the period as the Warriors looked to rebound following their first loss in conference play on Saturday across town at Cornerstone.
The visitors would continue to hold a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter, though Aquinas would chip the lead down to 12 at various points in the period. Gary would start off the period with the first five points for the Warriors while Cook would hit a three just before the buzzer to give Tech a 39-24 advantage at the break.
The Saints would come out of the locker room with a quick 5-0 run, only to see Knapke answer them with back-to-back triples to keep the lead at 14 points. The Warriors would continue to hold the hosts at bay with stifling defense as they entered the final session of regulation leading 51-41.
The two sides would track baskets over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before a 5-0 run by
Baylee Rinehart would put the Orange and Black up 62-47 with 3:46 to go. The tone of the game would turn quickly though, as Bri Spica would hit three consecutive three-pointers on back-to-back-to-back possessions for the Saints to cut the deficit to 62-56 with 2:30 left on the clock.
A basket by Gary would stop the run, but Momo Neal would then go on a 6-0 run thanks to a regular three-pointer and an old-fashioned one to make it a 64-62 game with 30 seconds to go, but the Warriors would go 4-4 from the free throw line to ice the game and come away with the victory.
Tech (10-2, 4-1 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they host Lourdes in a WHAC matchup. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. from the Schaefer Center and the game will also serve as the team's Alumni Day, with alums being recognized at halftime.
