LEBANON, Tenn. – For the first time since the 2008 season, the Indiana Tech softball team had a game end in a tie against Cumberland University on Friday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader, as darkness forced the game to be called after eight innings with the score knotted at 5-5 after falling 7-4 in the first game.
The Warriors would get on the board first as
Hannah Foltz drove in
Brianna Glass with a single to center, but the Phoenix would respond with three runs in the second to take the lead.
Alexis Vargo would drive in Glass with a sacrifice fly to right in the third to cut the deficit to one, but Cumberland would answer back with four runs off two walks, a hit-batsman, one hit and an error to extend their lead to 7-2.
Tech would start a rally in the seventh as Vargo drove in two more runs with a single to left and had runners on second and third with two outs and trailing 7-4, but Foltz would line out to left to end the game.
The Orange and Black would start off game two with three runs in the top of the first with four consecutive hits to start the game. After a leadoff bunt single from Glass,
Kelsey Robinson would drive in her from second with a single up the middle, while
Selena Schulteis doubled to left center to plate Robinson and make it 2-0 Tech. Schulteis would come around to score in the next at-bat as Vargo would record her fourth RBI of the day on a single up the middle.
The Phoenix would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and then used three hits in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Mackenzie Rieck would smash her first home run of the season in the top of the sixth to tie the game up at four and while the Phoenix got a runner to third, the Warriors were able to get out of the inning with the score tied up.
Both sides would score a run in their respective hats in the eighth inning and with darkness starting to take full effect at CU Softball Filed the game was called.
Tech (0-7-1) returns to action Saturday as they take on Cumberland in another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. from CU Softball Field.
