Tech Knocks Off Warriors, Falls to Grizzles in Sunday Twinbill

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Indiana Tech baseball team split its final day of the Grizzly Spring Baseball Invitational on Sunday as they defeated No. 8-ranked and defending AVISTA-NAIA World Series National Champion Lewis-Clark State, 8-1, before falling to the host No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett, 13-9, at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
 
The Warriors would do most of their damage in the fifth and sixth innings against Lewis-Clark State, scoring three runs on three hits in the fifth and adding four more runs in the sixth, with Tighe Koehring clearing the bases with a double to left while Peyton Newsom knocked in Koehring two batters later to make it an 8-1 game.
 
Cody Kellar pitched seven strong innings for his fifth win of the season, allowing one earned run while scattering 11 hits and striking out four. Jacob Koehring would finish the game by striking out five batters and allowing just one hit in two innings of work.
 
The second game of the day would feature a slugfest between Tech and the Grizzles, with 22 runs and 26 hits between the two teams. The hosts would chase starter Jared Harvey in the fifth as they scored three runs on two hits to the tie the game up at four. The Orange and Black would come back in the top of the sixth with three runs of their own with Charlie Sipe knocking in Chris Gaynor before Glen McClain tripled in Sipe and Benny Clark III to take a 7-4 lead.
 
The Grizzles would roar back in the seventh though as they used four hits to push across five runs to take a 9-8 lead before adding four more runs in the eight with three hits and taking advantage of a pair of Tech errors.
 
McClain finished the game with three RBI's and going 3-5, while Branson Dossen went 2-2 with a pinch-hit home run and a double. Harvey finished the game with a career-best 11 strikeouts and allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits.
 
Tech (15-5) continues their Spring Break trip on Tuesday as they take on No. 15-ranked Lindsey Wilson at 1 p.m. from Egnew Park in Columbia, Kentucky.
