FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 19-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team defeated Madonna in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 6-4, and 2-1 in 11 innings in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at Warrior Field.
The Warriors would get on the board in the first inning with a pair of runs, with
Tighe Koehring driving in
Dante Biagini with a sacrifice fly while
Matt Bandor singling in
Glen McClain to make it 2-0.
Tech would add on three more runs in the second
Charlie Sipe and Biagini driving in the third and fourth runs, respectively, while Koehring would get his second RBI on another sacrifice fly to make it a 5-0 game.
The Crusaders would get on the board in the fourth with a solo homer from Frankie Lucska while the Madonna third baseman cut the lead to 5-2 in the seventh with an RBI single.
The visitors would threaten again in the ninth as they scored a pair of runs, but
Josh Wiesman would come in with two outs and get Danny Blade to strikeout to end the game and pick up the save.
Johnny Crawford would pick up his seventh win of the season with five innings of one-run baseball, allowing just five hits and striking out three.
Game two would feature strong pitching performances on both sides, with both starters allowing just one unearned run to cross the plate, with
Cody Kellar giving up five hits in eight innings while Madonna's Alex DeYonker surrendering six hits in eight innings of work.
The Crusaders would runners to second twice in the 10
th, but Wiesman would wiggle out the jam to keep the game tied at one.
Keith Tatum would start things off in the 11
th by legging out a single to third, while Koehring would follow up a single through the left side to put Tatum in scoring position. An error on the Crusaders third baseman during Bandor's at-bat would allow Tatum to score from second and give the Warriors the sweep on the day.
Tech (34-9, 20-5 WHAC) concludes it series with Madonna on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Warrior Field.
