Warriors Fall to Panthers in Doubleheader Sweep

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The No. 19-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team fell to Davenport in both games of their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, falling in 10 innings in game on, 8-7, and, 6-4, in the night cap.

Glen McClain would give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as he sent one over the left field fence on a 1-0 count, but the Panthers would come back with seven runs in the fourth inning, using five hits and three walks to chase starter Johnny Crawford from the game.

Tech would answer right back though with four runs of their own in the fifth, with Peyton Newsom singling home David Barksdale and McClain to make it a 7-5 game. Newsom would bring the Orange and Black within a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh while McClain sent another ball over the left field fence to tie the game up at 7-7 in the eighth.

The visitors would get the game-winning run to third in the top of the ninth with two outs, but left the runs on the base paths. Josh Wiesman worked around a two-out double in the bottom of the inning to get the game in extra innings, but the Warriors would leave another pair of runners on in the 10th while the hosts would use a one-out triple and a single to left center to take game one, 8-7.

McClain and Newsom would each finish with three RBI's while Keith Tatum had a double. Joe Wolfe threw 4.2 innings in relief and struck out four.

Davenport would use four runs on five hits in the third to take a 5-0 lead on Tech, but Kip McWilliams team would score a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth, with Newsome sending a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center, but the Panthers would hold the Warriors to just one hit in the final three frames to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Cody Kellar pitched 7.1 innings in the loss while Matt Bandor drew a pair of walks in game two.

Tech (26-9, 14-5 WHAC) concludes their weekend set with Davenport on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. from Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
