FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's soccer team opened their 2017 season on the wrong end of a tough 3-2 double overtime loss to crosstown rival University of Saint Francis on Wednesday evening at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium.
Tech jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Cougars as
Kayla Saffran blasted one in from 20 yards out just seven minutes into the game for the first goal of her collegiate career. The Warriors would tack on to their lead in the 54
th minute as
Tori Singstock, playing in her first collegiate game in two years, found
Shelby Lucas in front of the goal who tapped it past the keeper to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
USF would cut the deficit in half in the 61
st minute as Aylissa Trosper found the back of the goal off a Cougar corner kick while the hosts would tie the match up in the 79
th minute. Each side would have a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but were stifled by the goalies as the crosstown foes headed in extra time.
Lucas would look for her second goal of the game in the 93
rd minute of the match, but was stopped by Sarah Lewis, while Trosper beat
Chloe Parker in the 102
nd minute to give the Cougars their third win of the year.
Lucas and Singstock would combine for five shots on net while Parker made five saves in the first start of her collegiate career.
Tech (0-1-0) returns to action Saturday as they Indiana University East in their home opener and Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field.
