LIMA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team suffered a setback Wednesday evening as they fell in straight sets (25-16, 25-19, 25-23) to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe, University of Northwestern Ohio, on the road to snap a four-game winning streak.
Leaders for the Warriors included
Olivia Niekamp with 11 kills and
Jordan Aylward with eight.
Autumn Stokes concluded the contest with 20 assists, while
Madeline MacDonald finished with a game-high 19 digs.
A quick lead would highlight the opening set for Tech, but they soon became plagued by a string of errors to let their opponents back in the frame with a 6-3 lead. Despite cutting the Racers' lead to just three, 13-10, UNOH would find their groove and turn that lead into a 20-12 advantage late and eventually find their way out to a 1-0 match lead.
The hosts would not put the brakes on heading into set number two. Errors put a damper on the Warriors hopes of turning things around from the opening frame as UNOH gained a 9-2 lead early. A 4-0 run would help Tech to cut the lead down to just four, 14-10, thanks to back-to-back kills from
Calista Helinski and Aylward, but the Racers reiterated their set dominance, collecting points to eventually claim a 25-19 decision.
Finding themselves down now 2-0 in the match, the Orange and Black would push a back and forth game to start set three, knotting things early at 5-5. Despite the Racers setting the pace for the match, the Warriors were still able to keep close, trailing 15-11 midway. Tech was able to push the set to an even 22-22 before taking sole possession of the lead, 23-22, from an UNOH error. The Racers would tie things back up, before regaining the lead and ultimately the 25-23 final set score.
The Orange and Black (16-11, 6-7 WHAC) will be back in action Friday as they travel to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for the WHAC contest. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
