FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team defeated Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe and ACHA Division I No. 10-ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn, 5-3, on Saturday evening at the SportONE/Parkview Ice House.
"We are always talking about playing a full 60 minutes," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. "We did that today and every player contributed. It was a team win against a quality opponent."
The Wolverines struck first with 11:49 to go in the first period, but a pair of power play goals put the Warriors up 2-1 at the end of the period.
Cameron Wirick tied the game up at 1-1 at the 8:36 mark while
Adam Jonak put Tech ahead with 58 seconds to go in the period.
UM-Dearborn struck back in the second as they knotted the game up at 2-2 with 17:22 in the period and ended the second on a high note thanks to a short-handed goal with 94 seconds on the clock. The Orange and Black put the pressure back on the defending WHAC Tournament Champions four minutes into the third as
Zach Bennett scored to tie the game up at 3-3.
After 14 scoreless minutes
Francesco Corona broke the tie with 2:43 to go in regulation as the winger notched the Warriors third power play goal of the game while
Jimmie Kotilainen iced the game with an empty-netter in the final minute of play.
Ryan O'Toole made 26 saves in net to pick up the win while Bennett tallied two assists for a team-high three points.
Tech (3-1-0, 3-1-0 WHAC) continues their season Friday, October 12 with a visit from defending NAIHA National Tournament champs Aquinas. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. from the SportONE/Parkview Ice House.
