Warriors Fall to Golden Eagles in WHAC Quarterfinals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 7-seeded Indiana Tech women's volleyball team fell to No. 2-seeded Cornerstone University in four sets, 19-25, 25-22, 14-25, 20-25, in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament, on Wednesday evening at Mol Arena.
 
Olivia Niekamp led the Warriors with a career-high 16 kills and hit .278 while Madison Park dished out 20 assists. Autumn Stokes had 18 assists and 11 digs while Madeline MacDonald had a match-high 34 digs. Mara Zell had four service aces and 15 digs to round out Tech's leaders.
 
Cornerstone got out to an 11-5 lead in the first set, but the Warriors would battle back to cut the deficit to 16-14. The hosts regained the advantage though as they closed out the set on a 6-3 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
 
Tech took a 6-3 lead to begin the second and grew their lead to 19-12 thanks to a 7-2 spurt. The Golden Eagles would not go down lightly though, as they used a 6-1 run to cut the deficit to 22-21 and force the Warriors to call a timeout. The Orange and Black closed out the set by taking three of the next four points to even the match at 1-1.
 
The Golden Eagles held the momentum in set three as they ran out to a 21-7 lead that was capped by a 7-0 spurt. A 6-1 run from Tech gave the visitors some momentum as they cut the deficit to 22-13, but Cornerstone took the set to go ahead 2-1 in the match.
 
The fourth set would be a back-and-forth battle as the Warriors roared back from a 15-9 deficit thanks to an 8-4 spurt to make it a 19-17 game. CU would regain the upper hand though by going on a 5-0 run to take the match, 3-1.
 
Tech concludes the 2018 season with a 20-15 record.
