FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team closed out the fall semester in spectacular style Saturday evening at the SportONE/Parkview Ice House as they defeated Lawrence Tech in a thrilling 5-4 game to run their winning streak to 10 games and claim the Tech Challenge Cup for the second year in a row.
After shaking off the rust in the first period following a late game on Friday night in suburban Detroit, the two teams exploded for five goals in the second. LTU kicked off the scoring at the 11:38 mark after a deflected shot on a delayed Tech penalty rolled into the Warriors net, but
Joel Holmberg countered two and a half minutes later to knot the game up at 1-1.
Francesco Corona put the Warriors up 2-1 at the 8:17 mark while
Jarrett Pfeiffer made it a 3-1 contest with 5:21 to play in the period.
The Blue Devils answered right back with three straight goals of their own though, notching a power play goal just before the second intermission and then tying the game up at 3-3 57 seconds into the third. The visitors would jump back ahead with 14:11 to play in regulation, but a power play goal from
Felix Kronwall made it a 4-4 game with 9:40 to play.
Holmberg put the Orange and Black up for good with 3:13 to play as he scored his second goal of the night while the Warriors held off a six-man offense for the Blue Devils for the final 70 seconds of action to finish the semester on a high note.
Stavros Soilis had two assists while
Ryan O'Toole made 20 saves in the win.
