FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana Tech wrestling team opened up dual action in spectacular fashion on Saturday as they went 4-0 in their annual Warrior Duals inside the Warrior Athletic Center. Tech defeated No. 15-ranked Campbellsville University (23-11), Lourdes University (40-6), No. 4-ranked University of the Cumberlands (27-10) and No. 18-ranked Marian University (27-22) on the day.
The Warriors started off their first match against Campbellsville with three straight wins from
Sawyer Miller,
Erique Early and
Da'Vion Wiliams, with Miller and Early defeating the No. 4 and No. 8-ranked wrestlers in their weight classes. Following losses at 149 and 157-lbs., Tech would control the rest of the match with wins from Jacob Wiemer,
Josue Hill and
Oscar Martinez, with Martinez grabbing a 16-0 tech fall to clinch the match.
The Orange and Black throttled Sooner Athletic Conference rival foe Lourdes in their second match of the day with five grapplers earning bonus points in the rout. Early, Williams and
Jacob Gross all scored tech falls while Hill and Martinez would pin their opponents in under two minutes.
In the most anticipated match of the day against the fourth-ranked Patriots, Tech started off the bout with a bang as Miller upset No. 1-ranked Hayden Lee 7-3 while Early and
Gaige Torres each notched tech falls to put the Warriors up 10-3.
Jacob Gross upset the eight-ranked wrestler in 165-lbs with a 5-2 win while
Eric Vermillion and Hill put the match out of reach with a pair of major decisions as they knocked off the No. 11 and No. 4-ranked wrestlers.
In their final match of the day against one of their in-state NAIA rivals, the Knights jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two matches. Torres put Tech on the scoreboard with a pin while
Jonathan Watkins tied the match up at 12 with a pin of his own. After splitting the next two matches, the Warriors got back-to-back pins from Weimer and Martinez to take the match and complete the perfect day.
Tech (4-0) returns to dual action next weekend as they head to Marshall, Missouri for the Missouri Valley Duals where they will take on University of Saint Mary, Williams Baptist University and Missouri Valley College.
