LEBANON, Tenn. – The Indiana Tech softball team was swept by Cumberland University on Saturday afternoon, falling in five innings, 11-2, in game one, before dropping the final game of the series, 5-2, at the CU Softball Field.
The Warriors found themselves behind the eight-ball in the bottom of the first as the Phoenix scored five times in their first time at the plate, using five hits, two hit batsmen, a walk and an error to take the early lead. Tech came right back in the top of the second though by pushing two runs across the plate thanks to an RBI groundout by
Brianna Glass and a
Karsyn Kitchen double to center.
Cumberland came right back with three more runs in the bottom half of the second to make it an 8-2 and allow just one more base runner for the Orange and Black in the game and tacked on three more runs in the fourth before forcing the mercy rule into effect after the fifth with the 11-2 win.
Ashley Alvey took the loss after going just two-thirds of an inning and allowing five runs, all earned.
The hosts struck first again in the final game of the weekend, scoring once in the first and plating four more in the second to get out to a 5-0 lead.
Kelsey Reinhardt put the Warriors on the scoreboard in the fourth with an RBI single to make it a 5-1 game. A bases-loaded walk from Kitchen made it a 5-2 game in the fifth, but the visitors left the bases loaded in the inning and managed just one more base runner in the final two innings as Cumberland completed the five-game sweep with the 5-2 victory.
Kirsten Wolf took the loss after allowing five earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Tech (0-5) returns to action on Tuesday, March 6 with a nonconference doubleheader at regional rival Huntington. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from the Forester Softball Field.
