Warriors Swept by Foresters in Final Pre-WHAC Games

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team was swept by regional rival Huntington on Thursday afternoon at the HU Softball Field, falling in game one, 4-3 (9) and, 8-5, in game two.

Tech took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one thanks to a pair of solo home runs from Emily Martin and Marta Pasqualini, but three straight hits from the Foresters, including back-to-back doubles, knotted the game up at 2-2 in the sixth. The Warriors had runners at second and third with two outs in the seventh, but were unable to get a run across the plate as the two teams headed into extra innings.

Carolyn Murrey drove in Caitlyn Walter with an RBI single in the eighth to give the visitors a 3-2 lead, but Huntington struck back quickly as they tied it up just two batters into their half of the frame. The Foresters loaded the bases up in the bottom of the ninth with nobody out, and while the Warriors got an out on a fielder's choice, the hosts got the winning run home off a sacrifice fly to right field as they took game one, 4-3.

Amanda Shonka pitched all 8.2 innings for Tech, allowing just two earned runs while striking out five and going 1-3 with a double. Murrey finished with a team-high two hits.

In game two the hosts took control early as they scored once in the first and three times in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Tech cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth thanks to a single from Bailey Dembinski that plated Lauren and Madison Ohnesorge, but HU responded with three more runs to extend the lead to 8-3.

Tech rallied to push across a pair of runs in the seventh, and had the game-tying run at the plate with two outs, but the Warriors were unable to get any more runs in the inning as HU completed the sweep.

Lauren Ohnesorge scored two runs and Kirsten Wolf took the loss after going 4.1 innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out four batters.

Tech (2-20) begins Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action next Wednesday as they travel to Cornerstone for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from the CU Softball Field.
