GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play Wednesday afternoon as they split with Cornerstone at the CU Softball Field, falling 6-2 in game one before winning 8-2 in game two.
The Golden Eagles got out to a quick lead over the Warriors in game one as they scored three times in the first inning as the hosts sent eight batters to the plate and took advantage of two Tech errors to score two of the runs. The visitors loaded the bases in the fourth with just one out on the board, but could only muster one run across the plate off a sacrifice fly from
Nicolle Sierra to cut the deficit to 4-1.
A leadoff double from Sierra in the seventh started a rally for Tech, but the Warriors could only push across one run in the inning as Cornerstone took the first game of conference play, 6-2.
Amanda Shonka took the loss after allowing six runs, all earned, on seven hits, in 3.1 innings of work.
Ashley Alvey threw the final 2.1 innings and drove in the Warriors second run of the game with an RBI single.
The nightcap saw Tech's offense explode for eight runs on nine hits, with four of the runs coming off the long ball.
Emily Martin started the scoring in the second with a solo shot to left, while Sierra made it a 3-1 Tech lead in the fourth with a home run to left as well. A one-out two-run homer from
Ali LeNoue extended the lead to 5-1 and started a five-run sixth inning for the Warriors. The final three runs came with two outs in the frame thanks to doubles from
Alexis Vargo and
Marta Pasqualini.
Kirsten Wolf picked up the win after going the distance in the circle, allowing just two runs, one earned, and scatted six hits over seven innings. LeNoue went 2-4 with a run and two RBI's at the dish while
Sarah Cummings was 1-3 with a triple and a run.
Tech (3-21, 1-1 WHAC) returns to action on Good Friday as they host Concordia (Mich.) in their home opener. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Havenhurst Park in New Haven, Indiana.
