LIMA, Ohio – Propelled by a four-run sixth inning scoring outburst, the Indiana Tech baseball program captured a nonconference road victory, 8-4, over the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers Monday at Racer Field in Lima, Ohio.
The Warriors would find themselves out to an early 2-0 after the first frame due to an
Alex Vydick single that plated
Reese Olden and
Glen McClain. The home side would quickly respond in the bottom of the second when outfielder Kyle Fisher clouted a two-run home run to left field.
After both teams exchanged one run each in the fifth stanza, the Warriors would take command of the affair in the top of the sixth inning. The Orange and Black registered their first tally of the frame when pinch runner
Jake Ritson scored on a throwing error. Five batters later, McClain smacked a clutch double with the bases loaded into right field to score
Dante Biagini,
Matt Bandor, and Olden.
Indiana Tech would tack on one more insurance run in the seventh, making the advantage 8-3 when pinch hitter
Taylor Nychyk hit a sacrifice fly to left field. From there, the Racers could muster just one run through the final three innings against the Warrior bullpen, which came via a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.
The Warriors were paced offensively by McClain and Olden who both registered two hits each, the only multi-hit efforts for the visitors. McClain would also record a team-best three RBI outing while Olden and Biagini both scored twice.
On the mound,
Brandon Hillier recorded his second win of the 2017-18 campaign, throwing 1.2 innings of relief and surrendering just one earned run on the day.
The Indiana Tech Warriors (16-14) will return to action Friday, March 30 as they welcome in WHAC competitor Lawrence Tech for the first matchup of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Friday with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. All games are scheduled to be played at Warrior Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
