Baseball Takes Pair from Aquinas in Midweek Contest

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team defeated Aquinas, 9-5, and, 7-1, a split conference/nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Field to run their winning streak to 10 games.

The Saints held the early advantage over the Warriors in game one as they scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth off starter Brandon Hillier. Tech came back strong though as Matt Bandor launched a three-run bomb to left to knot the game up at 3-3 in the sixth.

The floodgates opened for the Warrior offense in the seventh as they put up a five-spot in the inning off a bases-loaded walk to Reese Olden, a hit-batter in Matt Bandor and a two-run RBI single from Glen McClain, while Tighe Koehring capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to right to make it an 8-3 game.

Aquinas scratched across a pair of runs in the eight to cut the deficit to 8-5, but a Taylor Nychyk single to score Bobby Bennett made it a 9-5 game and Joe Pratt shut the door on the visitors in the ninth to give Tech a nine-game winning streak.

The Orange and Black jumped ahead to a 5-0 lead over the Saints in game two thanks to a four-run second inning. Kelvin Flores kicked things off in the second with a leadoff homer while Branson Dossen drove in Jarrett Lopez and Shoma Sasaki with a two-out single to make it a five-run lead.

Aquinas scored their lone one in the third as they were stymied by starter Seth Sorensen, who threw five innings of two-hit ball and struck out four in the win. The Warriors tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as two Tech runners scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Javier Castaneda.

Tech (24-14, 15-2 WHAC) returns to action Thursday as they host the University of Michigan-Dearborn in a doubleheader First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Warrior Field.
