Tech Sweeps Rochester to Snap Losing Skid

NEW HAVEN, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team swept Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Rochester on Wednesday afternoon at Havenhurst Park in their home opener, taking game one, 6-5, and winning 5-2 in game two.

Rochester got off to a quick start as they scored three in the top of the first to chase starter Amanda Shonka, but Tech started to chip away as they used a sacrifice fly from Emily Martin to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Orange and Black continued to fight back with an RBI single from Nicolle Sierra in the third while Bailey Dembinski scored in the fifth on a RC throwing error to tie the game up at 3-3.

The two sides traded runs in the sixth while Marta Pasqualini sent the visitors down in order in the seventh to set the stage for Tech. Martin led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center while Sierra followed her up with a double to the opposite gap to give the hosts the walk-off victory to snap a four-game losing skid.

Tech got a pair of runs in the second inning of game two off a wild pitch and RBI groundout from Carolyn Murrey, but the visiting Warriors knotted it up at 2-2 in the fourth as they strung together five consecutive hits, but Shonka came on in relief of Ashley Alvey and got two quick outs to get out of the inning with the game tied.

Ali LeNoue delivered the game-winning hit in the fifth with a double to left to score Dembinski while Alexis Vargo drove in a pair of insurance runs with a pinch-hit double to right to mark the final tally of 5-2.

Shonka picked up the win after throwing 3.2 innings of two-hit ball.

Tech (5-25, 3-5 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they travel to the University of Northwestern Ohio for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from the Racer Softball Field at St. Rita's Sports Complex.
