FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A 21-6 rout of No. 9-ranked Aquinas College and a record-breaking performance by senior
Sam Vikstrom created a picture-perfect ending as the No. 5-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors claimed their fourth-ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) regular season title Saturday afternoon at Warrior Athletic Field.
The Warriors, who improved to an undefeated 6-0 mark in conference play, controlled the Senior Day affair from the opening draw, netting 11 successive goals to begin the first half. Vikstrom would jumpstart the offensive attack just two minutes into the contest after scoring on an unassisted goal to provide the home side with a 1-0 edge.
However, it was her third strike at the 21:41 mark that provided the memorable and historical moment for the Indiana Tech women's lacrosse program during the weekend duel. With the goal, Vikstrom registered her 255th career point, surpassing the previous school record of 254 points set by former Tech standout Kendall Guthrie (2011-14).
During the first half run, the Warriors also received scoring contributions from junior
Jennifer Banks and seniors
Dakota Dawson,
Sarah Bates, and
Kristina Scott. The run propelled the Orange and Black to a 13-2 halftime cushion over their nationally-ranked opposition.
The Warrior offense continued clicking in the second half, putting up three more goals by junior
Bailey Childs, sophomore
McKenna Mesclier, and Scott in the first six minutes. The Saints attempted a late rally, scoring four goals in the second frame, but Indiana Tech would cruise to their 15th victory of the season.
Banks paced the Warriors offense with five goals in the win while Vikstrom and Dawson supplied four scores apiece. Meanwhile, Scott and Mesclier tallied five assists each while the former notched three goals. Junior goalkeeper
Sydney Davis was the victor in net for the 14th time this season following her four-save outing.
The Warriors (15-2, 6-0 WHAC) will now host the WHAC Tournament next week as the number one seed and will take on Aquinas in the first semifinal game on Friday, April 27 at 5 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field while the championship game will be held on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
