NEW HAVEN, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team lost a pair of games to the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Sunday afternoon at Havenhurst Park on Senior Day, falling 1-0 in game one and 6-3, in 12 innings, in game two.
Game one was a pitcher's duel from the start as
Amanda Shonka and Gina Verduzco both struck out the side in their opening innings of work, with the former finishing her outing with 10 while the latter punched out 17 en route to a one-hitter. The Wolverines scored the lone run in the game in the third off an RBI single from Riley Hison.
Verduzco held the Warriors off the base paths until a one-out single from
Ali LeNoue as she sent a 3-2 pitch through the left side to break up the perfect game, but she would be stranded at first as Verduzco go the final two outs of the game to go the distance in the circle to pick up the win.
Game two was a déjà vu performance until the sixth as UM-Dearborn got on the board first, but a long ball from
Emily Martin, her eighth blast of the season, tied the game up at 1-1 and the pitcher's duel continued for six more innings. Shonka, who came on with two outs in the first, held the Wolverines to just one run until the 12
th as they pushed five runs across the plate, with three of them coming on a homer.
Verduzco was finally pulled in the 12
th after throwing 141 pitches and allowing a one-out single to Martin. A sacrifice fly from
Alexis Vargo and an RBI single from
Caitlyn Walter cut the deficit to 6-3, but Ashlynn Henderson got
Ashley Alvey swinging to end the game and give the visitors the sweep and broke a tie for seventh-place in the conference standings.
Tech (9-29, 6-8 WHAC) returns to action Monday as they host Concordia in their final home games of the season. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from Havenhurst Park.
