NEW HAVEN, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team swept Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Concordia (Mich.) on Monday afternoon at Havenhurst Park, taking game one, 5-3, and game two, 5-4.
Tech struck twice in the second to take a 2-0 lead as the hosts took advantage of a pair of Cardinal miscues to take the early lead.
Kelsey Robinson scored on a single from
Alexis Vargo while Vargo came in to score three batters later on designed double steal with
Lauren Ohnesorge using the run down to by Vargo time to score.
Ali LeNoue doubled home
Bailey Dembinski in the fifth to make it a 3-0 game, and while the Cardinals scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs,
Ashley Alvey helped her own cause with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the frame while an errant throw from the Concordia catcher on a double steal allowed
Sarah Cummings to score the hosts fifth run of the game.
Alvey worked around a one-out triple in the seventh to go the distance in the circle and picked up win as the Warriors took game one, 5-4. Vargo finished the game 2-3 with a run while
Carolyn Murrey had a double.
The Warriors struck quickly in game two as
Emily Martin doubled in Dembinski and LeNoue in the bottom of the first while Vargo drove in Martin with an RBI groundout to make it 3-0. Another Cardinal error gave Tech a 4-0 lead after the first inning of play, but the visitors chased
Marta Pasqualini in the fifth with a four-run inning of their own.
Murrey put the Orange and Black back on top in the bottom of the frame an RBI fielder's choice while
Amanda Shonka, who had thrown 197 pitches in the doubleheader on Sunday, came on in relief in the fifth and allowed just one base runner in her final two innings of work to preserve the 5-4 win and give Tech the sweep.
Dembinski, Martin and Walter all recorded two hits in the contest while Walter scored twice.
Tech (11-29, 8-8 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they travel to Aquinas College for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from the Cornerstone University Softball Field.
