GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team picked up a split Wednesday afternoon against conference-leading Aquinas at the Cornerstone University Softball Stadium, taking game one, 8-2, before falling in the nightcap, 3-2.
Leading 2-1 after three innings of play, the Warriors increased their lead to 4-1 in the fourth with an RBI double from
Sarah Cummings while
Madison Ohnesorge sent one through the left side to make it a three-run game with the RBI single. Doubles from
Ali LeNoue and
Kelsey Reinhardt made it a 7-1 game in the sixth while Tech took advantage of a Saints error to tack on their eighth run of the game, providing starter
Amanda Shonka plenty of insurance runs to go the distance in the circle for the win.
Shonka scatted five hits across her seven innings of work and struck out three while allowing two runs, one earned. Ohnesorge went 3-4 with a run out of the number nine spot in the order while Cummings and LeNoue each picked up a pair of hits.
Bailey Dembinski and
Alexis Vargo notched doubles along with Cummings, Ohnesorge and Reinhardt.
Aquinas struck first in the second game of the day with a sacrifice fly after the hosts took advantage of back-to-back walks to begin the frame. Tech came back in the fifth as they scored on a sacrifice fly of their own as
Brianna Glass scored following a leadoff triple while she would come around to score again in the seventh off a Reinhardt single to make it a 2-1 lead for the Orange and Black heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Saints would not go down quietly though as they used a leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and walk to get the winning run on base with two outs in the inning while a triple from the hosts gave them the walk-off victory to avoid the sweep.
Dembinski and Glass both had two hits in the game with the former notching another double.
Tech (12-30, 9-9 WHAC) concludes their conference slate Friday as they travel to Lima, Ohio for a battle with the University of Northwestern Ohio as they look to clinch a spot in the WHAC Tournament. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from the Racer Softball Field.
