Warriors Rally to Defeat Cornerstone in WHAC Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 4-seeded Indiana Tech men's tennis program earned their fourth straight victory Friday morning, knocking off No. 5-seeded Cornerstone University, 5-2, in the opening round of the 2018 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament.

Tech faced an early 2-1 deficit after doubles play concluded at the Gainey Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The third-flight pairing of Pablo Bono and Alvaro Gomez tallied the lone doubles victory as they defeated Dan Ribbink and Nick Kleitch, 8-3. Meanwhile, number one doubles team Brunno Storani and Tiago Neves and the second-flight pairing of Rui Lima and Alvaro Garrido were toppled 8-3 and 8-6, respectively.

The Warriors responded quickly during singles play, however, notching four straight-set victories to complete a come-from-behind triumph over the Golden Eagles. Bono led off the comeback for the Orange and Black, continuing his impressive undefeated day by claiming a 6-1, 6-0 decision at number five singles. Lucas Braga provided Tech with their first lead of the contest after he secured a 6-2, 6-3 match at number six singles before Storani rebounded from his earlier loss to win 6-3, 6-2 in top-flight action. From there, Garrido would go on to close the quarterfinal round matchup by defeating Cornerstone's Aliaksei Kanstansina with a 6-2, 7-6 (4-0) score line.

With the win, Indiana Tech (10-12, 2-3 WHAC) advances to the WHAC Tournament semifinal round where they will face off against top-seeded University of Northwestern Ohio. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on Friday, April 27 at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
