WHITING, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball program concluded their 2018 regular season schedule Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of nonconference affairs to Calumet College of Saint Joseph (Ind.) at the Whiting Sports Complex in Whiting, Indiana.
Despite outhitting the home side 7-4, Indiana Tech would drop the series opener to the Crimson Wave, 4-2. The hosts opened the scoring with three quick runs off Warriors' starting pitcher
Marta Pasqualini in the bottom of the first inning. The Crimson Wave's Geena Locicero provided the offensive spark, supplying two RBI on a fielding error before coming around to score.
Tech would answer immediately in the top of the second frame when senior
Madison Ohnesorge rapped an RBI single up the middle to bring home sophomore
Brianna Glass. One play later,
Sarah Cummings would score to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Warrior offense would be stymied the remainder of the opener by starting pitcher Josselline Monge, who recorded the win while stucking out six. The home side would tack on an insurance tally in the fourth via an error to secure the first victory.
In the nightcap, the Orange and Black darted out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of action. The visitors hung a four spot in the top of the first following RBI from
Nicolle Sierra,
Caitlyn Walter, and
Madison Ohnesorge and a score via an error. Sierra then clouted an RBI triple in the second stanza to bring home
Ali LeNoue.
CCSJ's offense would come alive in the third inning to push across three runs. The Crimson Wave would follow up that performance with six scores in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning.
Sierra and freshman
Ashley Alvey each knocked RBI singles in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, to keep the Warriors within striking distance, but the Crimson Wave would hang on in game two, 11-7, for the sweep.
In game one, the Warriors' offense was paced by
Madison Ohnesorge and LeNoue, who both turned in 2-for-2 outings while the former added the lone RBI. Sierra headlined the team's efforts in game two, going 3-for-4 from the dish with three RBI.
The Warriors (14-32, 11-9 WHAC) now await the final seeding of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament. This season's berth marks the first time Indiana Tech has qualified for the postseason since the 2012 campaign. The tournament is set to be held next week (May 2-4) at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
