FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 5-ranked and No. 1-seeded Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team fell to No. 3-ranked and No. 2-seeded Lawrence Tech, 12-10, on Saturday afternoon in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament Championship at Warrior Athletic Field.
The two sides traded goals and leads over the first 13 minutes of the game with the Warriors holding a 4-3 advantage with 12:55 to play in the first half after
Bailey Childs' first goal of the day. Lawrence Tech answered back quickly though as they tied it up 37 seconds while they took the lead back with 10:59 on the clock and took a 6-4 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Orange and Black came out firing in the second half with three goals in the opening six minutes of the period, with
Sam Vikstrom notching the first and third goals while Childs scored the second goal of the stretch to take a 7-6 lead with 24:24 to play in the game. The Blue Devils answered back with a three-goal stretch of their own over the next eight minutes for a 9-7 lead at the 16:01 mark.
The visitors extended their lead to 12-8 with 9:57 on the clock and while
Kristina Scott found the back of the cage twice in the final 5:13 of the game, it would not be enough as Lawrence Tech took down the Warriors for the tournament title.
Vikstrom finished with three goals and a team-high four points, six ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls. Childs added four ground balls, three caused turnovers, two draw controls and an assist while
Sydney Davis made 11 saves in the cage and picked up four ground balls.
Tech (16-3) will now await an at-large bid to the NAIA National Invitational, set for May 9, 11 and 12 at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The NAIA will release the championship qualifiers and pairings along with the final Coaches' Top 10 Poll on Sunday at 4 p.m. at
