MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 3-seeded Indiana Tech baseball team opened up play in the NAIA Opening Round Monday afternoon with a 10-5 win in 10 innings over No. 2-seeded Webber International at Harrison Field.
The Orange and Black struck first as
Glen McClain knocked in
Matt Bandor with a single up the middle three batters into the game, but Webber responded in the bottom half of the first with a run of their own to tie the game up at 1-1. The game turned into a pitcher's duel over the next three innings with just one hit allowed between Tech's
Jason Sterrett and the Warriors' Juan Terron, until
Javier Castaneda launched an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence to make a 2-1 game in favor of the Tech Warriors.
Tech added runs in the sixth and seventh to extend their lead to 4-1 heading into the eighth inning, but the Webber Warriors managed to tie it up in the eighth with a two-out three-run homer to chase Sterrett from the mound.
Jared Harvey would come on in relief to get the final out of the inning and kept the game tied following the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
The Warriors found some offense in the top of the 10
th as they batted around and sent six runs across the plate to take a 10-4 lead. Bandor led things off with walk and came around to score following an error on Webber's second baseman, while
Bobby Bennett scored
Tighe Koehring and
Ryan Meisenheimer with a two-RBI single to make it a 7-4 game. The six-run cushion was more than enough for Harvey as he worked around a pair of errors in the bottom of the frame to send the Orange and Black into the winners bracket with the 10-5 victory.
Reese Olden, McClain and Bennett each finished with two hits apiece with Olden and Bennett driving in a pair of runs. Bandor and Meisenheimer both notched doubles in the win while
Jason Sterrett went 7.2 innings on the hill in the no-decision, allowing six hits and four runs, with just one being earned.
Tech (43-19) will now face off with the winner of No. 1-seeded Faulkner and No. 4-seeded Talladega on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. EDT from Harrison Field.
