Warriors Come Up Just Short in Five-Set Loss to Cornerstone

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team fell to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Cornerstone, 3-2 (25-14, 20-25, 17-25, 25-19, 13-15), Friday evening inside the Schaefer Center.
 
The Warriors came out on fire in the first thanks to a 5-0 run that gave them a 9-5 lead over the defending WHAC champions. Cornerstone cut the deficit down to 15-12, but a 9-1 spurt from Tech put them ahead 24-13 and they took set number one two points later to get out to the early lead.
 
The second set saw the Golden Eagles race out to the quick start as they held a 9-4 advantage. Trailing 16-11, the Orange and Black rattled off five straight points to knot the set up at 16-16, but CU came right back with a 6-2 run to go ahead 22-18 before winning 25-20 to tie the match up at 1-1.
 
Set three would go back and forth between the two sides until an 8-1 run from the visitors gave them a 21-15 lead as they went ahead 2-1 in the match with the 25-17 win. Cornerstone led the fourth set 11-8, but the Warriors used a 5-0 run to go ahead 18-15 and regain control of the set en route to tying up the match at 2-2.
 
The decisive set went back and forth with neither team getting out by more than two points until the final moments as the visitors rattled off three straight points to take the set and the match.
 
Allison Cole led the Warriors with 13 kills while Aubree Eggers had 12 kills and hit .391. Olivia Niekamp also had 12 kills while Madison Park had 22 digs and 20 assists.
 
Tech (7-6, 1-2 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they conclude a three-game homestand against Aquinas. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
