LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana Tech wrestling team had a number of wrestlers compete this past Friday at the NUWAY College Open inside the Kentucky Expo Center to kick off the spring semester.
Mason Gaines highlighted the weekend by finishing in seventh place and accumulating 11.5 team points for the Warriors. Gaines started off his tournament with a pin in 33 seconds and a 15-1 major decision to advance to the quarterfinals in the 157-lbs. division. Following a 7-21 setback in the quarters, he would move on to the consolation semifinals with a 3-2 victory but dropped a 2-1 decision in his next bout, but ended his day on a high note by earning a win in his final match to take seventh.
Rahman Johnson went 2-2 on the day in the 157-lbs. division, falling in his opening match before pulling off a pin in 41 seconds and an 8-0 major decision. Johnson's day would end in the third round of the consolation bracket as he fell 8-4. His younger brother,
Hassan Johnson, would also go 2-2 at 125-lbs.
Tech returns to action on Saturday, January 12 as they travel to Manchester University for the Spartan Mat Classic. Meet time is set for 9 a.m. from Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
