SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech women's soccer team fell to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Lourdes University, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
Elaina Monroe led both teams with six shots and had four on goal, while
Kayla Saffran converted the Warriors second penalty kick of the season in the 89
th minute, but the Gray Wolves converted three corner kicks into goals, two of them coming off the head of Annah Zacerkowny, to put the game out of reach.
Ally Zenda made seven saves in goal for Tech.
Lourdes picked up the pace early as they had two corner kicks and two shots on frame in the opening five minutes of the match. Monroe had her first shot at cracking the scoreboard in the seventh minute but was stymied by keeper Kerstyn Williams. The hosts got their first goal just minutes later off a corner kick that was headed in from Maria Schmidt in the 18
th minute.
Monroe had two more chances in the opening half to get the visitors on the scoreboard, but Williams kept the shutout intact with two more saves. The Gray Wolves increased the lead to 2-0 in the 49
th minute as they converted another corner kick with another header goal while Zacherkowny made it a 3-0 game in the 64
th minute with her second goal of the game that mimicked the first goal just 15 minutes earlier.
Saffran made the most of opportunity coming back into the game in the 65
th minute as she got a shot on target just one minute later, but the spark would not be enough as Tech dropped its fifth straight contest.
Tech (4-5-0, 0-2-0 WHAC) returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a matchup with Cornerstone University. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. from the Cornerstone Soccer Stadium.
