ADRIAN, Mich. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team fell to Siena Heights University in five sets (27-29, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 17-15) in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play Wednesday evening inside the SHU Fieldhouse.
Senior
Jordan Aylward set the program record for kills in a match with 30, breaking the old mark of 27 set by former All-American standout Ashley Hamilton against the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) in 2009, while hitting .343 and adding four blocks and six digs.
Olivia Niekamp had 13 kills while
Allison Cole added 12 kills.
Madison Park dished out a career-best 46 assists and had 11 digs for her 12
th double-double of the season while
Genna Karbowski notched her second double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs.
Madeline MacDonald and
Madysn Cardinal each had 21 digs while
Katrina Reynolds had six aces and 10 digs.
The first set was a battle that included free volleyball. Tech got out to a 7-2 lead to start the match, but saw the Saints battle back to take a 12-11 lead. Siena Heights eventually grew their advantage to 21-18, but the Warriors came back to tie the set up at 26-all after fighting off two match points. The Saints ended the set victorious though with three straight points to take it 29-27.
After the Warriors raced out to a 7-5 lead to begin the second set, the Saints came racing back with a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 advantage. A 7-1 spurt from the hosts pushed their lead to 19-13 while a 4-0 run put them ahead 24-18 and allowed them to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Saints came out in the third set ready to complete the sweep as they took a 9-3 lead, but the Warriors dug deep and pulled out a 7-0 spurt to go up 17-15. The visitors lead the rest of the way and took the third 25-21 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The fourth set was all Tech as the Orange and Black started off on a 10-1 run accounting for five kills during the run. The Warriors continued to build upon their lead and grew their advantage to 21-11 following a 3-0 spurt and tied the match up at 2-2 with the 25-15 win.
Neither side would give ground in the winner-take-all fifth set with 9 ties and two lead changes. Tech appeared poised to complete the comeback as they led 13-11, but the Saints scored the next two points to tie the match at 13 and fought off match point to tie it back up at 15-all. The hosts would then win the next two points to take the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.
Tech (23-8, 11-6 WHAC) returns to action Friday as they travel to Rochester University for a conference matchup. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m. from Garth Pleasant Arena.
