GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell just short in its upset bid over No. 4-ranked Morningside College in the first game of the Cornerstone Classic Friday evening inside Mol Arena, falling, 59-58.
Josh Kline notched his second straight double-double with a game-high 14 points and 11 rebounds while
Dilyn Good added a career-high 11 points off the bench.
Mitch Morken had nine points, nine rebounds and three assists while
Max Huber had nine points, six rebounds and two assists.
In the first-ever matchup between the two teams, the Top-25 battle did not disappoint in what was a back-and-forth contest. Morningside raced out to a 9-4 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game and eventually grew their advantage to 18-10 with 12:11 to play in the first half.
Following a three-minute scoring drought from both sides, the Warriors went on a 6-0 to tie the game up at 24-24, with Kline scoring five of the points. The Mustangs ended the half on a 6-4 run though to take a 30-28 lead into the break.
A 7-2 run from Tech tied the score at 35-all just five minutes into the second half, but Morningside was able to hold regain the lead and continued to stay just ahead of the Orange and Black. Back-to-back triples from Good sparked an 8-0 run for the Warriors though that pushed them ahead with 6:40 to go and a 54-49 lead on the scoreboard.
The Mustangs came back to go ahead 56-54 with two minutes left on the clock until a pair of free throws from
Jeremy Luciani knotted it back up at 56-all and snapped a 5:21 scoring drought for Tech. After trading baskets on their next two possession, both sides went cold from the field, but Trey Brown got a free throw to go in with six seconds left to give Morningside the lead and the win.
Tech (0-2) returns to action Saturday for their second and final game of the Cornerstone Classic where they will take on defending NCCAA Division II National Champions Grace Christian College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from Mol Arena.
