GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell to NCCAA foe Grace Christian University, 74-71, on Saturday afternoon in the Cornerstone Classic at Mol Arena.
Mitch Morken had a team-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds and two blocks.
Jeremy Davison added 12 points while
Josh Kline had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Corey McKinney chipped in nine points, five assists and two rebounds.
The Tigers, defending national champions in the NCCAA Division II, raced out to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game while the Warriors opened the contest 1-5 from the floor. A jumper from McKinney sparked an 8-2 run for Tech though that cut the deficit to 12-10 at the 15:02 mark. The Orange and Black continued to chip away at the lead but couldn't get on the right side of the scoreboard while the Tigers increased their advantage to nine points several times throughout the first half and led 42-37 at the break.
A triple from Morken started the second half on a good note for the Warriors as they went on an 11-4 run to go up 48-46 as Davison connected behind the arc to put Tech ahead for the first time. The Tigers proceeded to go back up by six at 56-50 at the 13:40 mark before a three-minute scoring drought ensued, with the Warriors drought reaching almost six minutes, before another three from Morken broke the drought with 10:39 to play.
A jumper from McKinney knotted it up at 58-all with 9:08 on the clock, while an and-one play from Kline and a three-pointer from Morken put the Orange and Black up 69-65 with 4:27 to go. The Tigers ended the game on a 9-2 run though and allowing the Warriors to convert only one shot from the field in the final four minutes of the game while a three from McKinney at the buzzer missed the mark that would've tied the game up.
Tech (0-3) returns to action on Tuesday as they welcome in No. 8-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene University to the Schaefer Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
