History Made, Warriors Complete Sweep of WHAC Titles in Nail-Biter Championship Match

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 17-ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team continued their historic season Saturday afternoon as they defeated Madonna University, 1-0, the championship match of the 2019 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament at Warrior Athletic Field. The win gave the Warriors the sweep of the regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history, with the former title their first-ever, while the latter is just their second-ever (2009).

Tech has now won five consecutive games while the team has not lost a game since September 20 while going 13-0-1, the longest unbeaten streak in program history. The 16 wins for the team is the second-most in history and trails just the 18 victories achieved by the 1981 and 1983 squads. The Orange and Black will now await their placement in the 2019 NAIA National Championship Opening Round, which will be announced Monday at 1 p.m. ET with the NAIA Selection Show. You can watch the selection show on the NAIA's Facebook page.

In a tightly contested championship contest, the two defenses controlled the game that saw just 14 total shots, with only three getting on target. The Crusaders had a corner kick opportunity in the 82nd minute that resulted in a shot on goal from four-time All-Conference selection and two-time All-American Yuri Farkas, but Ivan Safranic made the save, his only one of the day, and the Warriors were able to counterattack quickly. The ball was played ahead to Pep Casas who was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box, and the freshman put one in the upper left 90 past Madonna keeper Joe Smith to record the only goal of the game with just nine minutes left in regulation.

Tech was able to control possession after the goal and had a pair of shots while keeping the visitors to without even an opportunity to tie the game up as the Warriors won their first conference tournament since 2009.

Tech (16-4-1) will either play Friday or Saturday in the NAIA Opening Round, depending on where they are sent and what seed they get.
