Warriors Fall to Lakers in Nonconference Battle

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell to NCAA Division II foe Grand Valley State University, 62-59, Saturday afternoon inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

Max Huber led the Warriors with 15 points and three rebounds while Cory McKinney and Josh Kline each had 11 points, with the former adding eight rebounds and four assists and the latter collecting 10 rebounds. Lucas Lehrman had eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks while Jeremy Davison chipped in eight points.

Tech and GVSU tussled all afternoon long in a battle of the 2019 conference tournament champions from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), with five ties and 11 lead changes between the two teams. The Lakers led from the start, but never got ahead by more than two possessions early in the game. A triple from Davison knotted the game up at 16 with 10:40 to play in the first half before back-to-back three's from Davison and Huber put the Warriors up 22-20 with 7:28 remaining in the half. The hosts regained the lead following an 8-2 run and took a 30-26 lead into the locker room.

GVSU extended their lead up to eight points just over a minute into the second half, but a quick 6-0 spurt from Kline and Lehrman brought Tech to within a point at 37-36 with 15:38 to play. The Warriors found themselves down six again, but an 8-0 spurt but them ahead 46-44 with 10:45 on the clock following a triple from Davison.

The final 10 minutes was a back and forth highly contested battle with neither side holding more than a three-point advantage down the stretch. A triple from Huber knotted the game up at 56 with 2:08 on the clock while a free throw from McKinney gave the visitors a one-point lead and 1:44 remaining, but the Lakers responded with a 4-0 run to go up 60-57 with 28 seconds to play. McKinney brought Tech to within a point with a pair of free throws at the 16-second mark, but GVSU hit both opportunities at the charity stripe on their next possession and a game-tying shot from McKinney was off the mark as the Lakers held on to the win.

Tech (3-7) returns to action on Wednesday, December 4 as they return to conference action by hosting No. 9-ranked Madonna University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
